After shedding a Garmin etrex vista hCX which I loved, I made up our minds to go with the Dakota 20 (D20). I will probably be comparing the two in the evaluation.
Maps and Storage:
The D20 comes loaded with a basemap, which has most main highways, but no boulevards. So for your function, you might make a choice City Navigator (required for auto navigation to work), or Topo 2008 (shows mountain countours most lakes). Luckily, I had both Topo and City Nav on my computer.
Since the D20 comes with 850mb of interior memory, it can be enough for self chosen regions in Topo 2008 and/or Inland Lakes map, but no longer for City Nav. I put in a 4gb microSDHC card, which handled the 1.2gb .IMG file of the town navigator map. What would probably trouble some is that the D20 does no lengthyer include Mapsource(a great program for making custom maps, and add paths and routes) or any kind of software. The hCX comes bundled with Mapsource. Although if you buy the City Navigator, it comes with Mapsource.
When combining a couple of maps onto the device, the D20 is far extra convenient as you merely add the .IMG files (must have different file identifys) into the Garmin folder. D20 will routinely realize the maps and enable them. In the hCX, you needed to merge the entire .IMG information into one or use seperate microSD playing cards, which used to be a toll. The D20 retailers the saved tracks for my part as .GPX information, whereas the hcx clumps all of the paths into one file(named via date).
Auto Navigation:
I didn't in finding so much info about Auto Navigation for the D20 prior to bought, so I wasn't certain what to expect. After attempting it once or twice, it can be indubitably a step up from the hCX. There's an Automobile mode for navigation, the place the map is tilted so you'll find the turn coming from farther in advance. The instructions text is noticeably smaller on the D20, which might be laborious for some to read, but fortunately that you may just adjust the text measurement of the guidelines. You may also customize what knowledge you need to have to peer (i.e-distance to destination, odometer, and so forth.). The D20 offers almost the identical beep as the hCX when flips are approaching(no voice of course). The D20 navigation overall is more fascinating to the attention.

I lately determined to begin spending a while geocaching with my son. I eventually settled on both the Geomate, Jr., the Garmin Dakota, Garmin Oregon or DeLorme PN-40. I requested querys at forums, looked at online reviews, checked out those I might in finding in stores (Oregon and PN-20) and ultimately made up our minds on both the Dakota 10 (a nice value on a bundle was once the big attraction on the time) or the Oregon 300. The Geomate obtained great overviews and the most affordable of the staff, however it's simplest excellent for one factor, geocaching, tho it does it smartly. The PN-40 also bought beautiful just right evaluates, but the reveal is smaller than the Oregon's, the pc software is along with the tool buy and an annual subscription (at a particularly reasonable value tho) is needed for the entire on hand promoted map options. It's also a instrument with a horny steep finding out curve, especially on the commute planning facet.

I had prior to now owned and misplaced an eTrex Legend Cx. This is a big soar forward. Garmin promotes this as their new entry stage unit, nevertheless its 800 MB inside reminiscence hangs the entire topo and boulevard maps for the eastern US. The lack of ability to do street routing with out first buying City Navigator North America NT appears to be a synthetic difficulty.
The lock in is virtually rapid when I turn it again on at the same vicinity that I turned it off, and it can pick up a signal from inside my home. I not lose the sign once I go below deep woodland cover.
The display is vibrant, and higher than on my old unit.
